🔄 Rethinking Productivity
In a world where being busy has become synonymous with being productive, the writer and computer science professor Cal Newport, question this perspective in his book Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout. In an interview with Big Think, he explains why the current productivity model is exhausting us and how we can work more efficiently without burning out.
⚠️ The Pseudo-Productivity Problem
Traditionally, the productivity used to be measured en physical terms: how many products were produced per hour of work. However, in knowledge work, where each of us has different responsibilities and manage different tasks, this method no longer works.
To compensate this, we have adopted what Newport calls pseudo-productivity: measuring effort in number of mails sent, meetings attended and hours connected, instead of evaluating the real impact of our work. This approach leads us to interminable working days and constant fatigue.
📌 The Three Principles of Slow Productivity
- Do fewer things at once: Avoiding multitasking allows us a greater focus and better results. Constantly jumping between tasks leaves an “attention residue” that reduces our ability to concentrate and the quality of our work. We have to prioritize deep work and focus on fewer tasks to improve efficiency.
- Work at natural pace: Throughout human history, there have always been cycles of intense activity and rest. We have to accept that some periods will be quieter than others to avoid burnout.
- Obsess over quality: Identifying which tasks produces greatest impact and focusing on do them well is more important that simply filling the day with filler tasks. We have to invest in good tools to reinforces commitment.
✅ Conclusion
Newport explains us that slowing down the pace does not mean being less productive, but rather focusing on the work that truly matters. Adopting the Slow Productivity allow us to improve the quality of work, reduce stress and achieve a more sustainable balance.
